remember the pictures from my house and garden meme? I posted several photos from my Brother Cadfael roses. This plant is about 10 years old. The blooms are never overwhelming plentiful, but I get a steady stream of soft pink roses all summer

Last weekend, Chris was over getting photoshop tutoring for a project she was making for her sister's birthday, and she looked out the kitchen window and said, "Wow! Your roses are beautiful, and covered in blossoms!"

"Which roses?" I asked, and she replied
"The dark burgundy ones."

Hmmmm. now that was a poser, because I don't have any roses that could even be called red. I have two kinds of white, the Caeds, a yellow, a pink and yellow and the Oranges and Lemons.

So, out to the front porch, and there are my Caeds - dripping with dark burgundy roses.

Have my bees been taking the brown acid?

Maybe the rootstock is sending up shoots of its own? My white rugosas have a pale pink rose for their rootstock and it's taking over in spots. You can see it - with the rugosas in the background - here

thought you might know. I figured rootstock or weird cross pollination (my neighbors, I noticed today, have all dark reds).

Theyre very exhuberant, and I am enjoying that, but I don't want to lose my Caedfaels. Time for CSI Garden!

It looks like your Cadfael was grafted onto a commercial rootstock and you're getting a bumper crop of Hueys. Common enough practice; "own root" roses being the exception rather than the rule expecially in the showy hybrid Austin types.

What happens is that suckers can spring up from the rootstock, hence pruning is a must to keep grafted hybrids putting out the blooms you planted them for.

"Dr Huey" is probably the most common rootstock used in the trade.

So check down the stems and branches the red blooms are coming from. Likely they are coming off the sides of the base, or up through the soil surounding.

Just my semi-edjumicated guess.

edit....bingo! Austin grafts onto Hueys. http://www.davidaustinroses.com/american/main.asp

Hope this helps.

wow, you're a font of information! That was fascinating!

It's been too hot to relish the idea of CSI Gardening, but I will see check to see how much trouble I'm in. We generally prune them back hard, but last winter I let the canes go, since they kept the nosy neighbor away from the bedroom window. That'll teach me!

Well, DOES a rose of any other name smell as sweet?

Science!

Girl, have you tried a neti pot? They really work for lots of folks, both in acute situations and as maintenance. I started using one a few months back and my head is sooooo much happier. I went on my last trip with out and have now ordered one for travel. Really great.

Roses are easy, once they''re in. As long as you don't get a long dry summer where the township dosn't want you to water. A little snipping when they get seedy looking, and your in buisness.

Annalies has now moved to the rose capital of the world, we should implore her for pictures of her garden.

they were a serendipitious discovery at the nursery while I was looking for yellows (I am still in search of a pale yellow that takes off for me, but I have fallen for the yellow orange combination in the meanwhile.

I think Caedfael would like the idea of a rose named after him, and they are lovely, a soft pink/purple blush.

you are an evil, evil child. Now I want peachy ones and climbers, too.

I am hoping not to put more plants in the ground till our plans to stay are firmer, but man, that catalog rocks!
