Hightstown, the closest town to us, is the place where we used to produce Outta Sights & Sounds folk concerts. Here you can see Peddie lake draining across the top of the road (Main street) into rocky brook, and firemen wading back to the fire station.

Hightstown is also the picture on the front page of the Weather Channel's website. The building on the corner is a restaurant currently called Theo's on the Lake, now being called Theo's in the Lake.

Our area is being advised to drink bottled rather than tap water for the time being. Other than that, we were unaffected.

Whatever confluence of effects keeps the snow from falling on us even when everyone around us gets some seems to extend to storm protection in general. We are damp, but not flooded.

It was a little spooky though to see pictures popping up of places that are literally only a couple of minutes from us.

It looks like he worst of the hurricane for us was when several car horns in our parking lot were set off by the rain about 1:30 am, and went off constantly for about half an hour.

We can still hear the wind and rain, so I am hoping this holds true. We are under watch till late tomorrow afternoon....

Fusion

I encountered this article about fusion power several time while reading my friends list.

I don't think too many of you know that when Jim ([livejournal.com profile] notarysojac) and I first got together, he was assigned to Princeton to work on TOKAMAK. I used to come down to stay with him. I started rearranging my schedule so I had a long weekend, then I took both late night shifts so I had 4 days off... and eventually, I just stopped going home. Our fusion and theirs are therefore always connected in my mind.

I remember the Carter years with joy - fusion was getting funding, there were solar panels in the white house, Science (and especially Space) wasn't a dirty word....

Reagan *ripping out* the white house solar panels has become my symbol much of what followed. (I want to smack people who tell me - you should have started with solar in the 70's. Hello - *ripped out!*")

I was lucky though - I have Jim, and a memory that few get - of having a president they were actually proud of.

It would be nice to see safe fusion come about at last.
