I was curled up on the bed reading, and fell asleep. Then, I felt someone shaking the bed. (usually they just shake me!) Okay, I'm up, I'm up....

Well, apparently I just experienced my first earthquake!

Actually, there was a small quake in NJ shortly after Jim and I moved down here (In Cheesequake, NJ) but I slept through that one. This one actually woke me.

Ok this is getting weird. Another friend on my list felt it in PA and my kids just called and said they felt it in NC.

Hope ya'll are safe!

Yep. That's what you felt. The epicenter was in Virginia. Crazy.

I'm sure it says something about the world when an earthquake appears on FB and my LJ flist before I see it in my BBC news feed ;-)

Fortunately, sounds as though there haven't been any major injuries or significant damage... Glad you didn't get anything worse than a rude awakening!

Glad to hear it wasn't too untoward, and no damage I hope?

We had a mild earthquake with an epicentre about three miles from here a few years ago. The tremendous, but distant, bang woke me up, along with all my bead necklaces rattling against the dressing table mirror. My first confused thought was: is that the ammo dump at the army base going up? (The base is nearly 20 miles away, but it felt like something huge made the bang.) Quickly followed by... nah, it must have been an earthquake - and since there were no sirens and ambulances in the next few minutes... I decided it was an earthquake. Son slept through it, it was about 3am, Daughter however, staggered into my room announced that somebody was breaking into the house and insisted I go downstairs and investigate! With some trepidation, I did so - and was quite pleased to find it was an earthquake after all!. ;p

I blamed vacuuming woman, but it shook the bed for about a minute and a half, and then all the water started running. I had to get up and flush both toilets to get it to stop.

(The running water was the scariest part. I too thought someone was in the house.)

It sounds quite exciting.

My daughter experienced two whilst she was at uni in York (oddly enough!) and both times she thought it was house-mates moving furniture.

What was interesting to me was that I heard on CNN that it was the same size as the one in Haiti last year!! It didn't cause the damage because of a combination of the depth of it and our buildings are built better, etc. Amazing.
