Nothing Left To Chance
for the “preparations” challenge at tolkien weekly
Ulmo; 100 words

________________________

Abandonment, captivity, the song of the river and the wings of swans just to have the messenger arrive at the appointed time.

Seawrack, shipwreck and storm, lives lost and vessels destroyed to insure the guide would be waiting in just that place, just so.

Brave hearts, daring displeasure and the forbidden ways. The boy offered even his voice!

Never have I worked so hard, made such a visible bargain, written my name in such broad strokes – all to make sure you would not be caught unaware.

I gave you everything but ears.

Ah well – time you made your own plan.

Best laid plans, eh? I don't think I've ever seen so clearly the limitations and frustration of a Vala. It hurts.

I still feel awkward and rusty, but the thought at least came clear. Poor Ulmo. Kids, eh? sometimes you can't tell them anything. *grin*

Oh, this is wonderful!

The last two lines really say Ulmo to me. You've captured him just as he is in my mind.

Thanks! North (and by extension, I) don't have much use for the Valar. But North has a soft spot for Ulmo. That, and trying to write Tuor has me spending more time trying to get him clear. The ears line - yeah, that rings for me in his own voice.

I absolutely love that line. Especially the alliteration--it adds a touch of personality to the ravages of the sea.

Wonderful!

Thanks! I'm getting rusty, and convincing myself I can't start - nothing to do in that mindset but write *something*, or you make it come true.

hmmmm -- pondering the Ulmo /Ossian meeting on the shore...

haha! For some reason, I can only imagine a lecture, depending on which way the blonde boy's going, of course. ;-)

I have to admit I had no idea who the narrator of this was till I read the comments, but I liked the beauty of the words anyway. The first three lines read like a piece of poetry.

Thank you. Been awhile, and I feel a little rusty. The beginning has my triads, I always seem to fall back to that when I'm stuck. I'm happy if it's working - solstice seemed like a good time to take a chance.

I named the narrator, but only over on challenge line. I should fix that!
