International Recommend-A-Movie Day. This means everyone should go to their LJ right now and tell their friends to watch a really good movie which most of them probably have not seen. And then tell more people to do it. Hopefully, we'll all have lots and lots of recommendations by the end of the day.

The hardest part part of this is that you guys are such a varied lot, so here's a quicky list

Mrs Miniver
Grave of the Fireflies
Voices from a Distant Star
Cosi
The Dish
Gods and Monsters
The Pillow Book

Ooh, those are awesome. I've seen all but Mrs. Miniver (which, of course, I'll have to hop right out and find now, thanks to your rec).

:-)

I think I have to buy Mrs Miniver next time my dvd spot has a sale. Greer Garson - I think I love everything I have seen her in.

I Love G&M, and I also an a huge fan of James Whale, especially of Bride. The scene where Lynn Redgrave says she was horrible made me burst out "She was beautiful!" and of course, McKellen says the same exact thing, a heartbeat behind me. It made Jim's day.

I have only seen Gods and Monsters and Grave of the Fireflies. But I love movie recs! Thanks.

so, rec us back - what's your secret pleasure or overlooked favorite? (I would put American Yakuza on my secret pleasure list. I resisted, but when Chris made me watch, I found myself caught up in the story.)

The Dish and Pillow Book are two of my favorites as well. I'm glad you put them in this list.

I am pleased, but not at all surprised to find so many of you have seen these. I should have tried for more obscure, I suppose, but these came off the top of the head.

So, rec me one!

They're in my LJ; I made an entry like yours--things like Guns of Navarone and Year of Living Dangerously. Go take a look.

But did you like it, or only David? (David is splendid) If you like it as a film, try Strictly Ballroom.

Um! same here, I just saw Cosi and I like it. David is a scene stealer as always.
I don't know the rest, I mean the translation given in Spanish, I'll have to look at them in the IMDB first. None of them rings a bell.

Most of what I have fallen in love with recently has been Pacific Rim/Zone 4 movies. If you like Cosi as a movie, you might like Muriel's Wedding.

Awesome choices! Wavering between The Dish and Gods and Monsters on which one's my favourite from your list; the one I haven't seen is Voices from a Distant Star.

Voices is anime as well. If you liked the tone and writing of Grave of the Fireflies, I think you'll like it. Not a happy list, is it...

Another fan of Cosi here... *raises hand*

Gods and Monsters, too! This film is mesmerizing.

I think I like everything I've seen with Toni Colette. And Gods and Monsters! Just Wow.

So, rec me back - what do you suspect I am missing, or what favorite thing are you holding out on us with?

I can't say I've seen all of Toni Colette's films, but she was great in Sixth Sense, and Muriel's Wedding is one of my faves. Plus, she seems to have great chemistry with Dave Wenham, even though the relationship wasn't so desirable in The Boys.

Have you seen Emile? Another good one of Sir Ian that you'll probably enjoy.

Whoohoo! I've seen none of those.

Not sure how easy it will be to find them, but I can lend you most of them. Mrs Miniver is Greer Garson, B&W, about WWII.
Grave of the Fireflies and Voices from a Distant Star are anime. Cosi and The Dish are Australian. it took me a little websurfing to get a copy of The Pillow Book. Gods and Monsters should be everywhere, though - and rightly so. A stunning film.
