Wow, I think you summed that up beautifully. I was thinking much the same thing, only not so eloquently. When he started raving after the horse brought Faramir back, he didn't care about Faramir, didn't even care that he was still alive, just started raving about how his line was gone. I didn't get any sense of love for Boromir out of the Gondor scene in TTT, only a "you did that, now do this" sort of thing.
