It's only 2am, but I falling asleep where I sit. I had a dentist appointment today, and I always get anxious and unable to sleep if I know I have to be somewhere at an appointed daylight time. And Jim has taken some more of his *must take days off* days, so I have swung him over to my schedule as we sit up late watching anime and eating low carb rice pudding.

Sleeping only fitfully happened, but I got there on time. It was a loong appointment, part one of prep for putting a cap in where I broke my front tooth last year. It was painless and consisted mostly of sitting up talking listening to George while blue goop hardened in my mouth.

Jim and I went for an illicit lunch (hot dogs at the drive in, which is newly opened for the season) - partly so he could watch me trying to eat while I was still shot full of Novocain. Then the drive through car wash, where we played anime music (todays was from Ranma) while the giant rubbery sponges attacked the car.

About an hour later, we were in the middle of the conversation when the drugs wore off and Jim was stopped in mid sentence by the look on my face.

"Does it hurt now?" he asked. Not exactly -- but the instant it was gone, I could tell that my mouth had been full of some sort of adhesive that tasted both rancid and alcoholic. ickkkk. Fortunately it vanished as quickly as it came.


lots of office space and small scale clean up continues. Jim managed to make whatever arcane device he has hooked up at station two read the *OLD* floppies, (this required in part setting up a system that ran in OS8, and there is something unsettling about seeing those old startup screens on the new stations.) We read, opened, saved a few things and discarded several dozen floppies this afternoon. Barely a dent (clutches head like stunned monkey)

I am amazed at finding so many stories as I clean up my unsorted files (my project for the week) and concerned that the earliest ones that still seem to be missing ought to have been in folders with some of the foundlings.

Again -- if you are friended to my fiction journal. I am so sorry to be saturation spamming your lists. I am reliving the horror that came with having made that journal a community for the convenience of posting (which turned out to be nonexistent, but thankfully X-journal makes it simple, which just rubs salt in the wound.) I am enjoying hearing from some of you about those stories, but please feel free to unfriend it while I am working. I can't make private or back dated entries, the best I can do is members only - and most of you who are seeing it are members. The best I can offer is to turn the lot of you off as members and leave you friended. Let me know if you want me to do that, as I am only at the end of 2003....


Can't stop yawning. Think I'll see if Jim wants to go read manga in bed.

Why am I a sparrow?

Write a little about your name, why you chose it, what it means to you, etc. What would you change your name to, if you were changing it?


I've done this before, but it was when I was first out here on LJ.

The strange thing is, I already had a username (powzie) that is all over the internet, and that I seem to share with no one. But I thought it might keep my music life and my *Arda* life discrete, so when I posted my first story, my fingers took over and gave me the name "fileg". I love it because it is simple, easy to use, but meaningful to me, and connects me to Arda in a very strong but not so obvious way.

Fileg is, as most of you know, the Sindarin word for a small bird. I suppose there is no reason it couldn't be a small jewel, like a hummingbird, but since there are words for other particular birds, to me it stood for the ubiquitous little brown birds (or, as aspidites calls them: microaves brunii) - in particular sparrows, -that most people see so often they forget to see them.

I love them, and I find them subtle and beautiful, and they stay with you through the winter when you really need them. There is also a sly connection to the fact that my OFC is a ranger, and I think that sums up just how a ranger should be. What you see, what you don't see, when you don't see them at all -- and how startled you can be when you *do* really see them. *g*.


I've also talked in the past about how lucky I am to have notarysojac, one of the men who doesn't fall into the "Most women want to be pretty instead of smart because most men can see better than they can think" category.

I would never give it up now, but if I had chosen differently at the time I might have chosen North (or Eriol, the Tolkien concept she has her roots in). I didn't intend to expose her at that time, though she is now like secrets kept in anime (everyone knows, and *pretending* nobody else knows has become a family joke)

I hate using this icon twice in one day. I think I've seen this about before, and anyway I'm not sure I believe petitions and the like do any good, but I don't put anyting past this government, am totally in favor of information reaching people...

Congress is now pushing through a law that would give control of the Internet to giant companies who want to charge big bucks for things that are currently free or low-cost---everything from posting a webpage to being able to use audio, video, and photos online.

This would ruin the Internet for nearly everyone: nonprofits, online activists, Google users, Ipod listeners, small businesses, economic innovators, and others.

Politicians don't think we are paying attention to this issue. Many of them take campaign checks from big telecom companies and are on the verge of letting companies like AT&T and Verizon destroy the Internet for the little guy.
