Fringe star John Noble has signed up to play out a number of "outlandish" science experiments on a new U.S. TV show.

Noble has teamed up with the Science Channel to host Dark Matters, a series which will explore some of the most bizarre, real-life research studies ever conducted.

He tells Entertainment Weekly, “The stories we share in Dark Matters are as outlandish as a great sci-fi script or as disturbing as a classic horror tale - the only difference is that they’re all true. The series offers a glimpse into the dark side of science, as well as human nature.”

Some topics to be tackled in the new series include actual zombie investigations, head transplant studies and early attempts to cross-breed humans and apes.

The show, which will rely primarily on reenactment and computer generated imagery, is set to premiere in America on 31 August.
